Nixon also did his best to court conservatives, but his instinct was always to anchor himself in the rhetorical center. As president, his ambition to build a permanent New Majority depended upon walking a line between the radicalism of the left and the racialism of the far right.


Maybe we should retire the phrase Rockefeller Republicans and adopt Nixonian Republicans?

We have come a long way (down) when the current crop of Republicans make us look back fondly on Nixon...
