BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — As a rising star in Hungary's far-right Jobbik Party, Csanad Szegedi was notorious for his incendiary comments on Jews: He accused them of "buying up" the country, railed about the "Jewishness" of the political elite and claimed Jews were desecrating national symbols.

Then came a revelation that knocked him off his perch as ultra-nationalist standard-bearer: Szegedi himself is a Jew.

Following weeks of Internet rumors, Szegedi acknowledged in June that his grandparents on his mother's side were Jews — making him one too under Jewish law, even though he doesn't practice the faith. His grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor and his grandfather a veteran of forced labor camps.

Since then, the 30-year-old has become a pariah in Jobbik and his political career is on the brink of collapse. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

It's the classic, "Me thinketh the anti-Semite protest too much."

Having been told all my life that my grandmother was descended from Jewish immgrants, it came as a bit of a surprise when a relative who is into genealogy discovered no evidence for such ancestors exists. And the people on the same side we thought were Irish (Having a name that is common in Ireland) turn out not to be either. I'm about 30% more English that I had been told :frown:

Still the Welshness is confirmed along with the Irish on my mother's side (via some Collinses), so I'm still able to switch sides duriong the 6 nations...

But it is very common for people to not know about 'different' backgrounds. Families will build myths or hide facts out of embarassment. In parts of East London (where white racism is perhaps more obvious than elsewhere) there was a large population of black people in the mid 19th Century (some associated with people leaving Liberia), but within a few generations they were pretty much completely gone. Of course, they had assimilated into the white local population. So, even today 'white' families can have a black child without knowing of any reason why.

It's not just a warniong against anti-semitism, but all forms of bigotry.
