I think Huntsman's best bet is to switch parties and run in '16 as a centrist Democrat. If the Republican Party goes to the right, there's no room left for him.

The problem with this is he isn't a Democrat. His policy positions include

A Flat(ter) income Tax
eliminating all taxes on capital gains
opposition to same-sex marriage
a pro-life abortion position
opposition to gun control legislation
opposition to a mandate and support for free market policies in re. health insurance

I can't really see anybody with those positions getting anywhere in the Democratic Party. As a matter of fact, I would say they are all right in line with the Republican party.
