She married a guy who is routinely described as the one almost all Americans want to drink a beer with... and I doubt he would have settled for a complete bore.

How many times did he cheat on her ? Just sayin...

Hillary is introverted I think and not very personable. Those kind of qualities don't make it easy for strangers to relate to you. But she appears to have a very good relationship with her daughter and I don't note tension between her and Bill--I don't think they have stayed married all these years purely for political reasons. And she has a long record for working hard on behalf of children. As Ricky notes she has a lot of good friends. And she would not be able to make this political run for president unless she had a lot of important relationships with people involved in Democratic politics.

I have known people who were very friendly, the life of the party, fun to be around--but you could not count on them for anything that inconvenienced them. And I have known people who did not say much, we're not personable, not particularly fun to be with at a bar--but their family and friends could count on them. So character is not necessarily related to how facile one is with people.

Agreed. I just don't think she can win a "I'd like to have a beer with . . ." contest.

Yeah, look. The whole point about the 'like to have a beer with' thing is that it's indicative of how politicians come across to voters who don't know them privately and can only form a snap judgement based upon how they appear on television. Hillary scores badly on that, she comes across as cold, with an unappealing personality. The fact that she has a lot of friends who speak very highly of her is irrelevant.

And yet their marriage endures...
Trump, the fun one, is a known philanderer and has been married 3 times. And wants to bang his daughter...

So what.
Do you really think that's how a significant percentage of people make up their minds on who should be president?
If its trust ... (Which i beleive you think is Hillary's great weakness)
Here's what Romneys former Superpac is running... Probably too late to affect the primary outcomes. But damned useful for the general...

Nobody cares Ricky, it just happens that the beer test thing came up as a sidebar conversation and we ran with it for a while. Chill out.

Nearly 20 years ago I visited the US and Canada. And it was definitely the case that apart from Sam Adams, I had no decent American beers, and had to fall back on Canucky imports (because Euro imports were either expensive, a crap version or both).

But by my second visit ten years ago, US beer had undergone a Renaissance while Canadian beer was unchanged. Two years ago I was drinking a different Brewery each day along the West Coast, and had a fantastic range of beers. Oddly, the thought of having a Labatts never crossed my mind...

I'm going to suggest now that it was not related to either President.

It goes back to when Carter signed HR1337 which legalised tax free home brewing of beer and wine. Alongside larger craft breweries like Anchor (revived by Fritz Mayday in the 60s), there was the New Albion Brewery in Sonoma - started by a home-brewer - leading the vanguard in the US

New Albion failed, but became the model for microbreweries in the 80s, and then brewpubs started to emerge.

So I raise a glass to Jimmy and the 95th Congress.

I have had a few since Obama came into office. Never drank during Clinton's reign.

Pretty sure the best thing to do back in Billy's day was smoke. And inhale...
