Is there likely to be any other motivation?
Without more evidence, it could be for another reason. Let's wait until some evidence comes in before ascribing blame.
I asked a question.

But a leading one. Not sure why you needed to translate the name of Dar es Salaam for us, either.
There are other potential motives. Rebuffed advances. Revenge. Psychopathy.
As Zanzibar is not Pakistan, they seem to be taking it seriously.

The area is heavily Muslim. That is circumstantial evidence. You don't even have that.

I'm not trying to make a case, just answering your question as to whether there could be any other reason, so what evidence should I be presenting?
While Zanzibar does have a large Muslim population, it is also a tourist destination (a mate of mine went over there last year, and had no problems).
Apparently some people have been detained, but there are still no clear indications on exactly who and why.

In most every situation, liberals refuse to believe Islam is the motivating factor. I suppose, maybe, they might take the Hasan case differently now since he's so open about it.
Whenever I ask, it is because I eagerly await your contortions to avoid even a semblance of blaming Islamism. It really is a reflexive response. You just know it wasn't Islam.

Where did I say it was not Islam? I said it could be other things, but that is different to saying it was not Islam. Just because you have made up your mind does not mean everyone else has.
I still don't understand why your earlier linked article says Islam is the 'common denominator' when it has just discussed several countries including Cambodia. Cambodia is Buddhist.
