Well, RJ, I hope you are right. I hate putting limitations on people; i generally think that people can do amazing things if they try hard enough and have the drive to succeed. So you win this argument--even if I could prove otherwise I would not want to.

I think this is an incorrect (and elitist) sentiment. Intelligence is not a prerequisite for making a suitable living. Hard work, the right attitude, and doing one, two, or three thing very well can go a long way towards success.
I know a woman like this. Four children (there may be a fifth, it's hard to keep track), the best job she's ever had is fast-food, she's been involved in drugs and has a very marginal intellectual capacity.
And, you know who I blame? Her dad.
Her parents are married. Her mom stayed at home. They let that kid do whatever she wanted--and the results are not so good. Three kids are adopted by other family members.
I agree--a good attitude goes a long way. So do good parents.
