On Kasparov - he's been cleared of being a protestor, but may still face charges for biting a police officer: Garry Kasparov cleared of protesting at Pussy Riot trial. He is apparently considering suing the cop for libel.

To bring back the question of comparison to us 'repressive' western statists...

Opposition leaders and activists have frequently been found guilty of charges linked to protests against Putin. Russian law was recently changed regarding public gatherings to dramatically raise the fine for taking part in an unauthorised protest to 300,000 rubles (£6,000).

In what situations would the US government fine someone about $9,500 for taking part in an unauthorised protest?

NB: not for something else they do as part of that protest, but for being in the actual protest alone.

For biting a police officer, that's pretty bad.
