I was at
www.intrade.com today and was astounded by how many people had contracts for 2012 Republican VP Nominee. I was curious as to who people thought might be nominated for the VP slot if Romney were to get the presidential nomination. Or who should get it.
Interesting question for Mitt at Huckabee's forum today...

He'd want a southerner or a westerner I think, which rules out people like Cristie. I think he'll pick someone who didn't run. How about Gov. Mitch Daniels? Indiana is not geographically ideal, but the guy has a good reputation.

If it is Romney, I would think he would pick Rubio (despite his many statements he would not accept) or Jeb Bush (who probably would not want it either). Why? Not only would either one lock down Florida, but both have strong ties to the Hispanic communities.

Rubio would be a good choice, but being Cuban, I'm not sure how strong his ties are to the wider Hispanic communities. But he's a good candidate regardless of that, though, and he's from the right state.
J. Bush, however, I don't think so. Still too soon for another Bush. The electorate may revolt.
Here are a couple of others: Jim DeMint gave a great interview with John Stewart, he kept his own in a tough interview. He also has a lot of conservative cred should Romney get the nod. Tim Pawlenty? Minnesota is not Florida, but it's normally a D and he might have enough pull to make it an R.

Well, two things about Rubio: 1) he's a fantastic speaker and quick on his feet; 2) to be blunt, he ain't white. Given that the GOP is generally viewed as the party of old white guys, I think that is a big plus. He's young and he opens the door for a conversation about should the Hispanic vote just go in lock-step.
J. Bush, however, I don't think so. Still too soon for another Bush. The electorate may revolt.
Florida is so key. Further, his wife is a native of Mexico. He met her while teaching in Mexico. This is not your typical Bush story.

DeMint is a good choice--lots of Tea Party support, great communicator. If he'd run for President, he would have been my guy.
Pawlenty is more dull than Romney. That's not easy to do.

None of these guys fit the mold of a modern veep. It's not a stepping stone to the presidency anymore (GHWB was the last), and I don't see anyone who wants to run in '16 being associated with a losing Romney ticket

Saw Mitch Daniels on the response to the SOTU speech. I don't know what I was thinking. Perhaps I confused him with someone else. He was in back of Newt when they were handing out the charisma.

What if they were the ones bringing a touch of 'sane' to a Gingrich ticket?
I think that there's no way to predict who can be the VP nomination this time. As things stand, there could be a brokered convention. Which means that one of the bargaining chips will be who gets to make up the slate. I can't see Gingrich and Romney palling around up on the podium after the last month or so. But the social conservatives surely have a few names that they would be putting forward as a price for backing the leading candidate.

Especially important if Romney is the nominee: I don't think another boring white guy is going to help the ticket.
