Bids were generally low with a lot of tie-breakers. A 20 up front is always entertaining!

The lights go out, the green flag drops, and we are racing... boogity, boogity, boogity!

Turn 1 Summary

Row 1: Caldwell leaps out front at 80 w/ 2s (modified 3) and grabs the line. Kubala eases past the start line at 20.

Row 2: Costa pushes his start w/ 1s (modified 9) but with a mis-shift only comes out at 40. That allows Harley to go before him at 60.

Row 3: Walling pushes to 40 w/ 2s (modified 6). Puddifoot tucks in at 20.

Row 4: Schipper safely pulls into traffic at 60. Harrington spends 2 skill to go 40 (modified 1).

The early traffic jam continues...

Turn 2 Summary

Caldwell slows to 80 as he takes the line through Corner 1.

Harley, at 120, had designs on the line but finds it blocked. With no other options provided, he has to divert to the outer rail.

Costa grabs the line at 100. Kubala goes inside at 100.

Walling stays inside at 100. Schipper heads out to the line at 100.

Puddifoot stays inside at 100. Harrington goes to the line at 100.

Bernhardt takes an RM plot (NPR #1: Warning) of 120 and finds a hole in the crowd.

Dygert can't find a place for his car at 120 and must late brake w/ 1s (modified 7)*. He goes middle to set up the line. Hoyt dives inside at 100.

Kay picks up speed to 80.

* Note that if Larry had not submitted personal defaults, he would have used wear here.

Plenty of action this turn. Costa moves up 2 positions, Dygert 3, and Harrington 4. Schipper drops 3 but I doubt anyone is crying for him after his legal, yet ethically dubious move.

Turn 3 Summary

Caldwell set up the big left turn on the line at 100. Continuing on the outer rail, Harley burns 2 wear at 100 and tucks in behind the orange machine.

At 80, Kubala drops a wear. Costa clips 2 tires on the line at 120 and weaves through traffic into 2nd place.

Walling slows to 60 and goes inner rail for free. Schipper slows to 60 and sits on the exit row.

Harrington has the initiative at 100. He rolls inside, punches 2 tires, and dodges a few cars to move up four positions on the leaderboard. Puddifoot squeezes through the inside rail at 80 for a wear. Bernhardt gets pushed outside for free.

Hoyt has no place to park at 100. He late brakes with 1s (modified 2)* and goes outer rail. Dygert also has issues at 100 so he late brakes with 1s (modified 4)* and drops to the inside for a wear.

Kay pulls up to the corner on the line at 120.

* Personal defaults for unexpected braking.

Walling burns 2 wear at 120 on the outer rail. Puddifoot pulls up at 80 on the line.

Dygert dives inside at 100. Schipper grabs the line at 80.

Bernhardt slows to 60 to avoid wear expenditure then blocks the line. Hoyt also taps down to 60.

Rough day to be in a small car...

Track note: The lines in Turns 3 & 4 are mutually exclusive but the entire complex is one corner for wear purposes.

Turn 5 Summary

Caldwell putt-putts his way up the track at 100.

Costa hits the gas extra hard with 1s (modified 4). He zooms past orange at 160 and onto the line. Harley, at 140, drops in front of Jeff's machine.

Harrington has initiative at 160 and pulls up next the the #27. Kubala, at 140 and the bonus, makes it a three-wide going into the T3/T4 complex.

Walling finishes out T2 at 120 with wear already paid and finds a pocket of air.

Puddifoot drops a wear in the middle lane at 80. Schipper runs the T2 line for free at 60.

Kay clips a tire at 80 on the T2 line to clear. Bernhardt gets hung in the corner at 80, middle lane.

Serious battling going on in Baku... even for last place!

Turn 6 Summary

Costa runs the T3 line for a wear at 100 then skips the T4 line (?), goes outer rail, and ends inside.

Harley, at 120, bumps 2 wear in the T3 line and ALSO skips the T4 line (?) to go outer rail.

Harrington has to take plan B at 100. He runs the T3 80's and sets up the T4 line with 1 wear into the kitty. Kubala runs the T3 line at 80 for free before getting pushed to the outside in T4.

Caldwell, the eternal optimist, posts 120. He knocks down 2 wear on the T3 line then pulls off a FORCED PASS w/ 1skill on the #22 car! (no block - modified 6)

Walling, at 120, rolls into T3 on the outer rail for a wear.

Dygert and Puddifoot both plot 140 and flip-flop on the track as the former grabs the racing line.

Schipper uses his big engine to hit 140 down the straight. Kay also manages 140 and tucks in behind the McDonald's Chevy.

Bernhardt slows to 60, avoiding wear expenditure in T2. He pokes Hoyt in the eye by blocking the line. Hoyt, at 60 and the line blocked, goes middle lane for free.

Turn 7 Deadline: Friday, February 5th @ 7 a.m. EST (12 noon UTC)

The promotion battle is another aspect of this race to watch. Kubala, as of now, has the tie-breaker over Walling.

One of the most visually interesting corners you'll find in F1, Turn 8 is also one of the narrowest.

Here's a shot from T12, looking back at the Castle Corner...

Turn 12 pic.jpg

Turn 11 Summary

Harley takes off with a big lead at 160. Costa downs 2 wear on the T12 line at 100.

Harrington clips a tire in T8 at 80 before clearing T12 for another. Dygert, also at 80, burns a tire in the castle corner before getting pushed outside and hung up in T12 for a 2nd wear.

Caldwell eases his way around the castle at 60. Kubala is into the corner at 60 for free.

Walling is convinced 2 cars will fit in the castle corner, so he plots 100 and force passes (2 skill) the blocking Kubala. With a '1' and a '4' showing on the dice, he proves the doubters wrong but at the expense of some damage from the kerbs.

Puddifoot, at 60, can only say 'wow' at the chutzpah of the black car that just disappeared into the corner.

Kay runs the T7 line for free at 60. Schipper slows to 40 to squat on the inside rail.

Bernhardt at 60 gets pushed outside. Paul is sad. Hoyt pulls up to T7 at 80 on the line.

Just as the cars get up a head of speed, they have to brake down for Turn 15, a tight & narrow left-hander.
