Harvey Peck's analysis

The boutique track Shenandoah Downs ended their 15 day meet saturday night. A great night of racing with trainer and jockey titles to be won. Large crowd with record breaking handle. There were all kinds of rumours that in the 4th race the heavy favourites (5 and 6 horses) would not be part of the 4th race quinella. Management moved the on track quinella to the 6th race as a precaution. The famous sharp turns caused trouble in the 1st race. The ugly part of racing raised it's head when 3rd winner had the purse withheld until post race drug testing is complete. As usual, a few riders have hearings with stewards that should end up with suspensions.

_________________________________________________________

Here are the final tallies for last night's bettors. Congratulation to Tim for winning, yet again!

Tim: $88,500
Brent: $59,500
Jason: $28,000
Chris: $27,500
Stephen (4 races): $11,500
Mike: $5,000
Kevin: $1,000

On the whole, it was not a good night for the punters ($50,000 bank to start). But as all gamblers know, we're due for a change of luck

I'll publish the race results over the next week or so. We hope Harvey Peck chimes in with his analysis. Harvey adds both context and the insider's voice to a race program. He was in attendance until the power went out at the track and wasn't seen again after the lights came back on. My guess is, he discovered some Virginia hospitality at the locals bar across the street from the track.

CHRISTMAS SPICE broke clean, 2nd into the turn, leader hit rail, avoided trouble, ran off,g earing down at wire LUSH ROCKER, under steady hold 1/2 mile closed on outside, no match for winner DISTANT MIGHT never seemed to get into stride, made a belated close for 3rd EASTERN PRIDE broke slow, made up ground on the turn, could not keep up RA ENCOUNTER was in stalking position, got into very tight quarters, on turn tried to go outside clipped heels BUCKY BEAR, rider scrubbing on him at break, easy lead, large lead entering turn, hit rail eased

Harvey's take
The sharp turn claimed another horse. Brent Batram had the race won, but looking back under his arm his horse hit the rail. The horse may have swerved due to a shadow, the stewards will decide. The rider of the #2 horse got into really tight quarters, thought about going inside, switched to outside, clipping heels. NO riders hurt, horses seem ok Nice ride Tim K O'brien

speed of race 4
off track quinella 16.5

EXPERIMENT came out of gate on his toes, rider relaxed him for 3f, ask him to run on turn headed the field, whip 3 or 4 times, drew off. LONESOME SATURN broke slow, got into stride in the turn, great trip JUST AFTER hustled out of gate easy lead, got collared on the turn, held for show REST OF FIELD never got into race. The race was downhill, no closers

Harvey's take
Mike P Smith showed why he will be in hall of fame. He used tactical speed to stay close. Had his mount relaxed, under mild urging he was 2nd top of stretch, lightly used whip and drew off on the grandstand side. Connections were not happy with kk smith, felt he let horse go too fast early. He was not going to beat mike p smith today

speed 2.5
off track quinella 31,000

Editor's note: due to power surge at start of 5th race has caused delay in printing of the racing charts

T6: 3/5 Bonus: Cowboy Chamber. The double-bonus gives the long-shot, Lonesome Saturn 2nd, beating out Just After by a nose.

SHOTGUN DIRK urged from the gate, 5, 10, 15 lengths lead, rider could not rate the horse, into the bit for 6 furlongs TRIPLE TINKERBELL broke with rest of field, ran in a pack battling for 2nd, rail was able to hold second EGYPT POWER stalking for 2nd place made bid on far turn SUNKISSED SNORT, nice break but showed little, best of the rest FUTURE IMBECILE broke very slow DESTINY'S was battling for 2nd early, stopped

Harvey's Take
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALARM! Really? Lazy L farms does it again. That is the dark underbelly of racing, the "milkshake". Thanks to harness racing, their drug problem is creating havoc in our beloved industry.

Shadow Wine was my horse. It was very memorable because it's the only time I've seen a 20-1 longshot win a WP&S race!
