Wilson's third point had nothing to do with war, peace, borders or imperialism: it called for free trade among the nations of the world. I'd like to think that Wilson believed that trade binds nations together, and nations so bound would be less likely to be belligerent. While calls for free trade are common today, 100 years ago, this was fairly revolutionary. In fact, 12 years later the USA passed the Smoot-Hawley Act, which restricted trade and plunged the USA deep into the great depression. The USA has a long history of not listening to itself.
