After four years of many bad weeks, this week 100 years ago, was likely the worst week of the war for Imperial Germany. 100 years ago today, the Ottomans signed their armistice. Four days later the Austrians signed their own separate peace, leaving Germany as the only remaining Central Power. Knowing the war was lost, German troops started surrendering & retreating en masse. Gone were the days of futile trench warfare; during these last days, allied troops were advancing often five miles a day in a chaotic and fluid battlefield. All that remained was 1) negotiating the terms of the peace that everyone knew was coming, and 2) continuing to throw away the lives of men, on both sides, in a war that was already over.

I need a retreat from England. You have lots of choices. Can I get it from you by tomorrow 9pm? Your Fall 1903 orders are due on November 6 at 9pm. Let me know my mistakes.

F North Sea retreats to Helgoland Bight

A bight is a bend or curve in a coastline, river, or other geographical feature. It typically indicates a large, open bay, often only slightly receding. It is distinguished from a sound by being shallower.

Diplomacy teaches me much.
