100 years ago last week the Meuse-Argonne Offensive started, which was the largest single American military action in history. More than 1,000,000 American soldiers took part, which was about 1% of the total American population. It was estimated at the time that during the first three hours of the offensive the Americans fired more ammunition than was fired during the entire American Civil War. While the Americans were slow to mobilize, they were all in by fall 1918. Makes our opening seem gentle!
