The "Meuse" in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive refers to the Meuse River that flows north to the Netherlands. By the end of the offensive the Americans actually crossed the Meuse in places and approached it in others. Just twenty-six years later, Americans would be fighting another great battle at the same river, this time stopping Germans from advancing over the Meuse in their quest to reach Antwerp during what we now call the Battle of the Bulge. History rhymes, sometimes pretty well.
