100 years ago as Verdun raged, the largest naval battle since Trafalgar occurred when 250 ships engaged off the coast of Jutland. Nearly 10,000 sailors were lost over two days. Many say the Germans were lucky: British armor piercing shells tended to bounce off German armor and explode, rarely doing their job. There's a metaphor in there somewhere.
