Some might wonder why, after two years of trench warfare, that the Germans believed the offensive at Verdun would be successful. 101 years ago this week, the Germans started the Gorlice–Tarnów offensive on the Eastern front. Initially conceived as a minor action to relieve pressure on their Austrian allies, this offensive led to a breakthrough, collapsing of the Eastern front, causing the capture of hundreds of thousands of Russians, and led directly to what became known as the Great Retreat of 1915, which left all of Poland in German hands. France, however, ≠ Russia.
