During the Battle of Verdun, and as the British were making preparations for the Battle of the Somme, folks in Ireland decided that they would like their own Republic, and started something we now call the Easter Rebellion. Crushed in six days, largely through the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons in Dublin that resulted in as many civilian casualties as combatant, the British made clear that they had no patience for rebellion, at least not in 1916. 100 years ago this week.
