I've been tinkering with the map design of MinX's variant. Any crit. welcome.
The second image is an attempt to show what the units are doing without lots of cumbersome arrows on the board. I guess the orders might be a little open to interpretation on the map itself, but as Players would still be able to refer to the orders supplied as text, I don't know if it is a problem or not.
I shall also post a few extra sets of rule ideas once they're done.
Don't suppose there's a .dpy of this kicking about is there?

Very nice, Douglas. And I do like the idea of the icons also representing the orders. However, I think the several "support" order icons are unnecessary and some get too busy looking. I'd stick with one general support icon. The equestrian is the most interesting and clearly visualized. Are you going to have a bounce icon?

Hey Scarlatti - thanks for the feedback (sorry I only just noticed this post!)
I think you're probably right about the extra icons, tbh I haven't thought about doing any more with this, I'm currently working on a completely different variant map when work allows - but I like the theme of pericles, so maybe I will come back to it in the future

I think this map got played twice - maybe even a third time. I designed a lot of lousy games but this one played out nicely - good balance and good dynamics - no (or little) stagnation. Maybe some of the players from back then can comment here as well - tell me if my memory is faulty!
I remember that in at least one game and maybe more the southern E-W sea lane (between Laconius and Messianicus) became critical. [your U's in Laconius Sinus need fixing.] So you may want to think about including Kythira and thus getting an extra sea lane. No dpy - sorry.
